No offense to the Jiggaman and his camp over at Rocnation but if I were an aspiring musician looking for a possible label situation I would sign my life over to Suge Knight (back in the 90′s when Suge was known to even kick his own artist’s ass) before I EVER signed with them!
Now some might say that that is a bit extreme, but in this current climate of the ever struggling music industry, extreme is what these artists need. And what they don’t need, however, is the horrible mistreatment they’re getting over at poorly managed “New Roc”.
I mean honestly Jay, for the past three years, you and your buddies over at Rocnation have been dropping the ball and completely neglecting one of your top artists in J. Cole, who was arguably one of the hottest young MC’s of 2009, and who had all types of momentum coming off the success of his guest appearance alongside your “A Star Is Born” off your platinum selling BP3 album. I’m not trying to tell you how to run your business but why would you not capitalize off that? Why was Cole on the same XXL Freshman cover alongside Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean back in 2010, yet he’s the only one out the three yet to drop an album? ( Not to mention- - - Wiz & Sean’s careers have skyrocketed to the moon while Jermaine’s has been sitting at the same stagnant level for nearly two years.) Seriously..why?
But the Rocnation mismanagement doesn’t just stop at Jermaine, no not at all, just look at how you guys blew it with pubescent pop sensation Willow Smith. I mean in 2010, Willow had arguably one of the biggest records in the country with her infectious ( and quite catchy) hit “Whip My Hair” , and rather than capitalize off the song’s momentum and insane worldwide buzz, you guys totally allowed the Willow “Music Machine” to completely fizzle out. And if that wasn’t bad enough - - - -it’s been nearly 10 months since Whip My Hair debuted and Rocnation has yet to push a second single! I mean really Jay?!? What are you doing?? Willow had the teen pop market locked up and ready to go - - - but you guys were over there napping! Wake up!
I’m not even going to get on the subject of Jay Electronica. No, I’m not going to do that. That would just be too easy. But I do have to ask…what was the point in signing another one of Hip Hop’s dopest new MC’s only to let them sit down on the shelf and rot? Where’s the logical ( or business) sense in that?
To basically sum it up….all three of the aforementioned artists have the potential to become WORLDWIDE superstars, but that can’t happen if the supposed CEO of their organization - -who just happens to also be an artist - -is too busy making sure that fans are “watching his throne“..instead of watching his artists.
But hey…what do I know? I’m no industry exec….I’m just a blogger……..right?
