The White House voted late Thursday night to repeal the controversial and discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell,”policy that has been in place since the Clinton administration. The policy targets openly gay men and lesbians and essentially banns them from serving in the United States military.
Finally realizing the error of their ways, the house passed the bill with a unified 234 to 194 vote to repeal the outdated and Draconian policy. Although the bill has been passed it still won’t go into effect until December of this year so gays or lesbians currently serving in the military might still be under heavy scrutiny until then. Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank who is openly gay, had this to say in regards to the passing of the bill:
“Those who tell me that the presence of gay and lesbian members of the military undermine the effectiveness of a fighting force and undermine unit cohesion must have never heard of Israel,”
Congratulations to all the men and women who fought so hard to get this piece of legislation passed so that our openly gay brothers and sisters can share the same rights and privileges as the rest of society. Congrats!!
